Description
An important part of the prolific work of Peruvian photographer Martín Chambi (Coaza, 1891 – Cusco, 1973) is preserved in the Jan Mulder collection. This book compiles the author’s most iconic images, presenting them through an exquisitely designed publication. Of Indigenous origin, Chambi dedicated much of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes, reclaiming the pre-Hispanic past through images of Incan ruins and portraits of life in Andean communities during the early 20th century. In doing so, Chambi introduced a new perspective to the local photography of his time, offering a unifying vision of Peru and shedding light on emerging indigenist discourses that were gaining strength in the region.
In 1924, he photographed Machu Picchu, the Incan citadel. From this experience, his work entered a phase where his mastery of light, form, space, and texture—further defined by unique angles and a personal aesthetic—established him as a symbol of contemporary and documentary photography in Peru and Latin America.
