Description
How can a country be so rich in resources and still suffer from an annual inflation rate exceeding 100%? 'Vaca Muerta Ascends' presents this paradox through a unique narrative that contrasts the lush oil landscapes of Argentina with the escalating inflation rate.
The records primarily focus on the Vaca Muerta region, one of the world's largest reserves of shale gas and oil. The area exhibits undeniable but controversial potential for Argentina as an energy exporter. In contrast to this potential, the title of each photograph in the book reflects the rising inflation in Argentina from the day the first image was captured.
The project began in late December 2021, establishing a 0% inflation rate as the reference baseline. Over two visits, approximately a year apart, the photographic sequence documents the steady increase in inflation, culminating in a 110% rise after one year.
Despite resilient communities and resource-rich landscapes, the progress of this nation is hindered by rampant inflation. This tension underscores the complexity of Argentina's future. The photographic narrative aims to mirror this complexity, where economic potential confronts economic reality.
