Description

"Plebiscito en Chile, 1988" brings together over sixty photographs taken by photographer Álvaro Hoppe between the years 1983 and 1990. This publication addresses the plebiscite held in 1988, which marked the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile. The narrative is constructed in a sequence of three historical periods. The first chapter, "Manifestations for Democracy," displays images of the most intense and symbolic moments of resistance against the dictatorship. In the second chapter, "Plebiscite Campaign," we can observe snapshots of both the Yes and No campaigners, political gatherings, and captures from the television campaign. The final chapter, on October 5th, 1988, is the last section, depicting the voting process, the tense wait for the results, the statements from the No campaign and the Ministry of Interior, concluding with the celebration and the uncertainty about the history that we already know how it unfolded. The book includes texts by writer Pablo Azocar, researcher Ángeles Donoso, former director of the Museum of Fine Arts Roberto Farriol, and book editor Alexis Díaz Belmar.
