Description
The exhibition "Yanomami, l'esprit de la forêt" organized by the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in 2003 aimed to create a meeting between the shamans of a Yanomami village in the Brazilian Amazon and five international artists. The artists were welcomed into the Yanomami community to confront their creative worlds with shamanic images, without intending to illustrate or translate, but rather to create a space of "free association." Archive photographs, geographical maps, and contemporary artworks presented in the exhibition catalog recount the unique experience of the artists invited to Watoriki and the history of the Yanomami people. Contemporary art and mythical thinking are secretly shown to be in harmony, affirming the power of the image that is dreamed, thought, or told.
