Description
Born in Niterói nine years after the end of World War II, José Diniz grew up listening to stories about submarines, air attacks, and shipwrecks. The child would gaze at the sea, imagining that submarines could be lurking beneath the water. They soon became his drawing subjects. As an adult, his interest in submarines and maritime stories intensified. In "O Céu Vem Baixo" (The Sky Comes Low), Diniz masterfully articulates photographs of submarines at sea—scale models he built in his carpentry workshop—period documents, self-portraits, scenes from war movies, and those childhood drawings. The narrative evokes a dense and evocative film noir atmosphere. The book's graphic design mimics ship logbooks.
