Description

Since the late 19th century and throughout the 20th century, the uses of photography went beyond the State and the initial scientific interests. They accompanied the adventures of missionaries in their evangelizing campaigns among various indigenous peoples. The clichés, turned into posters and postcards, were appropriated by promoters and travel agents who sought to construct a tourist image of the Amazon forest. At the same time, their consumption became incorporated into the daily lives of settler populations - for example, La Merced, Moyobamba, Oxapampa, Iquitos - thanks to the work of the first local photographers. These images allowed local elites to negotiate their inclusion in the national imaginary. El Bosque Ilustrado includes various types of documents (photographs, postcards, newspaper clippings, engravings "based on photographs," descriptions of cameras and photographic clichés), sourced from both public archives and libraries, as well as private collections in Peru and abroad. Authors: Juan Carlos La Serna / Jean-Pierre Chaumeil
