"Ver" by Gabriel Valansi (Buenos Aires, 1959) is a world of remnants, an emptied stage where the almost complete absence of human, animal, or plant life exposes unsettling traces. Natural light does not exist. Seeing is not simply opening one's eyes; it is searching where, seemingly, there is nothing, pausing at the scene of a trivial event to find a trace made of rough and degraded materials from a likewise degraded civilization. Spotlights and beams of artificial light make the marks on walls and pavements discernible. Plastic replaces nature. And Valansi focuses on spaces and fragments that, although barely knowing what they are or what they were, we nevertheless recognize as familiar. A Lynchian atmosphere emerges from the world in which we move daily, and the narrative we manage to construct will be that of our own lives housed there.
