Pinta BAphoto 2020, Dialogues of the Collection. Jean-Louis Larivière & Gabriel Valansi

Chapter #11 of LiveTalk, a series of conversations with artists, curators, collectors, gallerists, and museum directors from both the local and international scenes, who reflected on various aspects of photography and contemporary art. On this occasion, art collector Jean-Louis Larivière and visual artist and photographer Gabriel Valansi engaged in a dialogue about photography collecting.

The Larivière Foundation was created by Jean-Louis Larivière, born in Argentina and raised in France, in a family always connected to art. From a young age, Jean-Louis developed a strong inclination towards photography, which eventually led him to found Ediciones Larivière in 1993. His goal was to promote the cultural and natural heritage of South America through visually high-quality books.

Over the years, Ediciones Larivière has published more than 150 titles on topics ranging from architecture and nature to lifestyle and, above all, photography. Approximately 17 years ago, Jean-Louis took on the commitment of publishing the work of both recognized and emerging photographers, traveling across Latin America with curator Alexis Fabry, discovering and acquiring works by Latin American photographers. It was through this effort that the collection grew into a robust and significant body of work. This motivated Jean-Louis to create an institution to ensure the preservation and dissemination of this valuable material in the country that has given him so much throughout his life.

We especially thank Pinta BAphoto for the audiovisual recording and for collaborating in the dissemination of the work of Jean-Louis and the Larivière Foundation.
