Description
The book brings together the work of three German photographers who emigrated to South America in the late 1930s due to the rise of Nazism in Europe. All three received photographic training in Germany, at the legendary Bauhaus school and in Paul Wolff's studio, and began practicing their profession in Berlin, Paris, and London. Jeanne Mandello primarily worked in the studio and conducted extensive research in this context, working on advertising commissions and magazines. Hildegard Rosenthal used the small format (24x36) for reportage and urban landscapes, particularly in São Paulo. Grete Stern, on the other hand, dedicated a large part of her work to photomontage. Each of them settled in a different country in South America: Uruguay (Jeanne Mandello), Brazil (Hildegard Rosenthal), and Argentina (Grete Stern). The book follows the exemplary journey of these three women who belong to approximately the same generation. Forced into exile by war and anti-Semitism, they had to leave their studio and archives behind to resume their photographic activity in more peaceful climates.
