Uribe, Juan Camilo
Juan Camilo Uribe was born and worked his entire life in Medellín, a city with strong traditional beliefs. His works reflect this cultural environment through assemblages or collages that include cutouts of religious prints, as well as everyday household objects such as ornamented trays and plastic containers, beads, lingerie, and cheap jewelry. Juan Camilo Uribe transferred and arranged these materials into the artistic realm, where they shift from a popular consumption system to a space for reflection on their aesthetic and symbolic qualities. His work spanned from the early 1970s until his death. He created collages with objects, cutouts, and assemblages with lighting systems, installations, and screen prints; he presented implausible projects for public spaces and carried out a body of work through postal mail.
