Schwarz, Herman

He studied at the Academy of Advertising Art in León (1970), at the National School of Fine Arts (1972, 1973, and 1977), and at the Forest Art College in St. Louis, Missouri (1973 and 1977). He attended the Photography Training Course at CETUC, at the Catholic University, taught by Eduardo Gómez Gaetano (1977). He has worked as a photojournalist since 1978, following the temporary closure of the National School of Fine Arts in December 1977. He began in photojournalism by contributing to various left-wing publications such as Trinchera Roja, Clase Obrera, El Metalúrgico, Allpa, Quehacer, Monos y Monadas, and others. Later, he was hired by the weekly La Calle, and then moved to the magazine Marka, which became Testimonio. During the same period, he was also a photographer for the Sunday supplement El Caballo Rojo of El Diario de Marka. He later worked for El Búho, Jaque, La República, Sí, El Mundo, El Peruano, El Comercio, and La Primera. In 1989, he published the book "Víctor Humareda, Imagen de un Hombre" with an essay by Enrique Sánchez Hernani. He joined the team of the Social Photography Workshops (TAFOS) in 1991, where he was responsible for the Dissemination Area until 1993. In 2006, he was invited by the Fundación Telefónica de España to give a lecture on his research: "Martín Chambi, Graphic Correspondent (1918-1929)," as part of a major exhibition on our extraordinary photographer from Puno, at the Telefónica headquarters in Madrid. He has served as a photography advisor to the National Library of Peru. In 2009, he co-curated the exhibition of Eugenio Courret's archive "La Destrucción del Olvido" at the ICPNA in Miraflores. He has exhibited his photographs in various solo and group shows. In 2012, a major retrospective exhibition titled "Al Ras del Suelo. La Imagen Documental" was held at the Peruvian North American Cultural Institute as part of the First Lima Photography Biennial, curated by Augusto del Valle. He is currently a photo editor and photographic researcher of historical books for Barclay Editores and a Professor of History of Photography at the Centro de la Imagen since 2009.
