Coppola, Horacio

Horacio Coppola was born in Buenos Aires in 1906. In 1932 he studied in Berlin at the famous Bauhaus Department of Photography, where he met Grete Stern, his first wife. In 1936 he returned to Buenos Aires, opened his studio, and began to forge links with the country’s most renowned intellectuals and artists. He was at the forefront of new developments in the 1930s with his visual experimentation in association with A. Heinrich, A. Saderman and G. Stern. He began to photograph Buenos Aires commissioned by the Municipality, and this work was to result in his emblematic book: Buenos Aires 1936 (visión fotográfica). He shot several 16 mm shorts and documentaries such as Así nació el Obelisco (1936). In 1959, after his divorce, he married Raquel Palomeque. In 1982 he was awarded the Platinum Konex for Visual Arts; in 1986 he received the National Arts Fund Grand Prix, and in 2003 he was declared an Illustrious Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires. He died in 2012.
