Neves, Eustáquio

Eustaquio Neves is a self-taught photographer. Although he studied chemistry and music, he ultimately decided to dedicate himself to the activity that has given him fame and recognition. He has worked independently for various publications since 1984, and his work has developed in the field of ethnic studies with the Afro-Brazilian community. He lives in the areas that served as refuges for runaway slaves: the quilombos. Since 1989, he has been researching and developing alternative and multidisciplinary techniques, manipulating negatives and paints. Over the past five years, he has researched electronic media, including sequence and movement. His work has been published in several exhibitions in Brazil and abroad and has received awards and recognition from audiences and critics alike. In 1999, he was awarded first prize in the J. P. Morgan Photography Award in São Paulo (Brazil), and that same year, he enjoyed the Gasworks International Residency Programme in London (United Kingdom).
