Gruenberg, Philippe
Philippe Gruenberg was born in Lima in 1972, where he now lives and works. He studied Economics and Philosophy at the London School Of Economics and Political Science and later Photography at the Gaudí Institute in Lima. His work has been exhibited at the 25th São Paulo Biennial (2002), the IX International Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador (2007), the Pinacoteca of São Paulo, the Museum of Art of Lima, the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, Costa Rica, the Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, England, and the Lothringer Dreizehn, Munich, Germany, among many others. He was a co-founder and director of the Galería del Escusado and Espacio La Culpable (2002-2008). Philippe Gruenberg's photographic work observes the construction of an imaginary through buildings whose order is constantly crossed by crosses and conflicts. Images that in the formal rigidity of their framing subtly reassess each framework in an operation that subtracts and questions the notion of time and history. His images do not necessarily pursue truth through neutrality and formality, but rather aim at activating friction and desire: A somewhat lyrical approach that allows him to insert himself into the most significant places and themes of a collective imaginary, with a marked interest in the coordinates that intersect history, popular becoming, and their contrasts.
