Garbe, Walter
Son of German Ernst Garbe, who arrived in Brazil in 1882. By the early 20th century, Walter Garbe worked as an assistant and artist photographer and, accompanied by his father, explored the region of the Doce River, from the border of the state of Minas Gerais to Linhares and the Juparanã Lagoon in Espírito Santo. They obtained valuable zoological collections but did not interact with the indigenous people on that occasion. Between March and May of 1909, he made several excursions to the left bank of the Doce River in Espírito Santo and obtained a collection of ethnographic pieces from the Botocudo Indians.
