Freire, René
He was one of the members of the group "Suma," founded in 1976 in Ricardo Rocha's workshop at the National School of Fine Arts. Suma rejected all institutional dimensions of artistic practice, moving the workshop, gallery, and museum to the streets. René Freire, who later evolved towards an abstract and poetic painting with a palette reduced to variations of one color, faithful to the experiences carried out during the 1960s on the photocopying technique, works on the valorization of gesture (both physical and pictorial), which was one of the driving forces of action of the Suma group on the walls of Mexico. René Freire participated with Suma in the Paris Biennale in 1976, as well as in the commemoration of the 1978 massacre at the Plaza Tres Culturas. The exhibitions in recent years that stand out as a tribute to the Suma group are those of the Machado gallery and the José Bienvenu gallery. René Freire is also a member of the National System of Creators. In turn, the Machado Gallery exhibited a series of paintings in 2011, all titled "Lluvia" (Rain), gathered under the title "En el blanco" (In the white).
