Descended from Germans, he was raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he received a scholarship in 1957 to study photography for three years at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich, Germany. In 1961, he began his career as a professional photographer and later taught at the Paul Coremans Institute in Mexico City.
