Martínez Castro, Agustín
Martinez Castro, a gay activist (Mexico 1950-1992), also engaged in artistic activities such as photography and graphic arts, through which he expressed the principles of homosexual identity. In 1976, he was part of the Grupo de Fotógrafos Independientes (GFI), along with Xavier Quirarte, Rogelio Villareal, Alberto Pergón, Miguel Fematt, and Armando Cristeto. The collective, led by self-taught artist Adolfo-tógrafo (Adolfo Patiño, "Peyote"), operated outside the traditional exhibition circuits and organized over one hundred mobile exhibitions in street stalls between 1976 and 1984.
Martínez Castro served as the Vice President of the Consejo Mexicano de Fotografía (Mexican Council of Photography) with José Luis Neyra as the President in 1984. In the same year, he also coordinated the First National Photography Colloquium in Pachuca, Hidalgo. He held individual exhibitions in Mexico in 1985, 1986, and 1987.
