Auerbach, Ellen
(Germany 1906-2004)
In 1929, Auerbach founded the ringl + pit photography studio with Grete Stern in Berlin, specializing in advertising photography, where they experimented with collage and surrealist language. Auerbach's photographs are not 'constructed' (with the exception of those made for advertising purposes), being images that the artist sourced from her surroundings, captured in a magical moment to render them visible. In 1965, when she was in the U.S., she gave up photography altogether.
